Our body and nervous systems are often overloaded with stress in modern day living, which can lead to nervous system burnout. Additionally, we may have unresolved trauma in our systems. Acute stress is a healthy biological survival response to an imminent threat, however, when nervous system activation continues, the body becomes normalised in a stress response. Chronic stress, trauma, dis-ease and hormonal imbalances all put a load on our nervous systems. Nervous system dysregulation may present as insomnia, anxiety, chronic pain, digestive issues or chronic illnesses.
Trauma not only affects our mind, it often resides as a holding pattern in our body. Trauma generally leads to dysregulation of the nervous system, which inhibits the capacity for healing. There is growing evidence that somatic therapies, including yoga and mindfulness, offer a holistic treatment pathway for individuals affected by PTSD, developmental trauma or complex trauma.
Trauma-informed somatic therapies can be beneficial for resolving nervous system dysregulation and support mind-body wellbeing.
